Giving the community something back: Pearl of Bezuidenhout

Introduction:

The Bezuidenhout Pearls are made from PLA, a plastic derived from sugar or starch polymers. The arrangement includes 50 pearls strung on a spiral cord, with a central 51st pearl. This symbolizes the year 2023, with 50 pearls representing others and the 51st pearl representing an individual. The spiral design is inspired by Marijke de Goey's "Monument of Human Error" near Soza. The artwork connects to my German heritage and its history. Learn more on the official page.

During the Parelroute (Pearl Route), residents of Bezuidenhout offer you a glimpse into their lives, showcasing their unique passions, hobbies, and collections right in their homes. This includes visual arts, music, gardens, and much more. Bezuidenhout's residents are welcome to participate as "Pearls" or to visit these unique showcases.

In previous years, around 50 "Pearls" participated on each Pearl Day, resulting in approximately 2,000 visits annually. In 2019, the 10th anniversary was celebrated with a 2-day edition. During the Parelroute, you can identify the participating "Pearls" by the flags displayed at their homes or special locations.
