After my eventful experience in Erfurt (as detailed in my previous blog), I was relieved to have stowed my suitcase and settled into seat #41 in coach #24. Opting for a forward-facing seat, I was content, albeit burdened by my large backpack and a smaller one, both packed to the brim. Collapsing into my seat by the window, I found myself sandwiched between a woman and, across the aisle, a man who seemed displeased by the volume of luggage I had brought along.

The Awkward Encounter

Before taking my seat, I attempted to stow my backpacks in the overhead compartment. However, a slight brush with the disgruntled man led to an unexpected tension, as if he were ready to engage in a confrontation. Perhaps his sullen mood was due to a sea of red in his stock market investments, visible on his array of Apple devices. Nevertheless, I must commend the overall friendliness and helpfulness of people throughout the journey, with one notable exception.

Elevated Assistance

Not only did fellow passengers prove helpful, but I also found myself relying on elevators more times in a day than ever before. From the lift in the Anger1 shopping mall in Erfurt to multiple lifts in Frankfurt – but more on that later.

A Ticketing Conundrum

Having secured my spot post-Erfurt rush, I noticed the train conductor making her way towards my seat, diligently checking tickets. Calmly, I opened my DB travel app, which conveniently stores my tickets and discount subscriptions. The app displayed my ticket's QR code without issue, but when attempting to reveal the discount subscription, a problem surfaced. The app insisted on logging into the website, a task made challenging by Germany's notorious countryside network issues.

Stressful Connection Issues

My stress levels escalated as the conductor stood by, and the website struggled to load. Luckily, the ICE wifi provided a lifeline, allowing me to access the necessary information. However, a frustrating loop ensued between the app and the website, much to the displeasure of the conductor, who emphasized the importance of the discount QR code to avoid ticket invalidation.

A Critical Oversight

Faced with a critical moment reminiscent of searching for forgotten homework, I desperately navigated the loop. The conductor granted me a brief reprieve, and during this time, I revisited my discount subscription, discovering its validity until December 5th. Panic set in as I realized the QR code was present a week prior when the subscription was still active.

A Costly Mistake

She came back and I decided to tell the truth:“Let me be honest here, I saw that my discount subscription was valid until 05.12. today is 13.12. I am sorry“. Her answer: „Well Mister…that is unfortunate… and that means your ticket is invalid and you have to pay the price + a fee“. I was prepared for the worst and already calculated in my head that it will be a few beers less in Finland. The next thought I had was: please lady, make it quick. I am exhausted. Her answer surprised me: “We will stop at the next station in 2 minutes. I have to get out to check things. When I come back you either have arranged a discount subscription or it will be expensive.“

A Hasty Resolution

Praying that the ICE wifi would cooperate, I hastily secured a new €17.90 25% discount subscription QR code in the DB app, adding a few more grey hairs to my beard. A subsequent conversation ensued, and upon reaching Frankfurt, we bid each other farewell.

Unexpected Encounters in Frankfurt

Navigating the station with my belongings, I encountered the former Minister of Economy, Peter Altmaier, taking pictures with passengers. The amusing sight lightened my mood, and I proceeded to my accommodation in Frankfurt Main.

Reflections in Bed

After a satisfying dinner at Heppy Greens, I reflected on the day's numerous elevator rides, ranging from the Erfurt shopping mall to the semi-horizontal lift at Frankfurt Bockenheim, a novel experience that truly lifted my spirits.

From Rudolstadt to Erfurt: A Hectic Dash to Saturn and Beyond

Racing Against Time: A Layover Adventure in Erfurt

My journey to Finland commenced in Rudolstadt, a charming town surrounded by scenic beauty. However, an unexpected escapade awaited me during a brief layover in Erfurt.

On the Tracks (14:16 - 15:02):

The adventure unfolded innocently enough at 14:16 when I boarded the RE 42 (4988) train from Rudolstadt-Schwarza, platform 2. With 26 minutes on the clock, my destination was Jena-Göschwitz. A short layover at 14:42 in Jena-Göschwitz on platform 2 gave way to a connecting RE 3 (3960) train, platform 5, bound for Erfurt Hbf, arriving at 15:02.

Spontaneous Detour to Saturn (15:38 - 15:50):

Having 36 minutes before the next leg of my journey, I succumbed to a seemingly brilliant idea at 15:38. I decided to visit Saturn, a mere 10-minute walk from Erfurt Hbf. With an impending departure at 16:18 on the ICE 1556 to Wiesbaden Hbf, I had little time to spare.

Shopping Against the Clock:

The trouble began when I realized that Saturn was on the third level of the Anger1 shopping center, far from a swift in-and-out scenario. Racing against the clock, I hastily navigated the store, finally paying for my purchase at 15:50.

Return Journey Race (15:50 - 16:15):

The return journey was a saga in itself. Waiting for the lift felt like an eternity, and frustration mounted. As I descended, I couldn't shake the realization that I had underestimated the physical toll of this impromptu shopping spree.

The Mad Dash:

With a new suitcase, backpacks, and DJ equipment in tow, I raced through the streets of Erfurt, disregarding traffic signals and praying not to encounter the police. Exhaustion set in, but with minutes to spare, I reached the station at 16:15 just as the ICE 1556 to Wiesbaden Hbf was about to depart from platform 2. A minor six-minute delay had miraculously worked in my favor.

Reflecting on the Whirlwind:

Collapsed into the train, I reflected on the whirlwind experience. Totally exhausted but relieved, I couldn't help but marvel at the unpredictability of travel. The "Pearl of Bezuidenhout" story doesn't end with the big version exhibited during the Parelroute day. It continues with an intimate touch. A small version, transformed into a keychain, serves as a keepsake—an emblem of shared creativity. Each keychain found its way to the hands of participating individuals, sealing the bond between creator and community.

While wandering through the vibrant streets of Charlottenburg, I came across a mesmerizing street art installation. The piece depicted a girl gracefully perched on a swing, her gaze fixed on two balloons tethered to the swing's ropes. The simplicity and emotion conveyed by the artwork left a lasting impression on me, and I was determined to capture its essence in a unique way.
